Karen Dixon MBE
Likes: Spending time with her family and watching her children grow up.
Hates: Tony Blair!
Karen Dixon has never considered any other career than her chosen one. Since she was tiny she has been bitten by the riding bug and has gone on to achieve an impressive list of accolades, including an Olympic Silver Medal and an MBE. Karen may have been out of the limelight a little recently but she is working hard, bringing on some impressive new youngsters, and is still a long way off even thinking about retiring from top grade eventing!
Her day starts early as she has to get her two children up, fed and off to school before she can start riding at about 9.15am. Karen generally has around 10 horses in from an ever changing posse of promising youngsters, including Smart Enough, who was 5th at Le Lion in 2005 and is aiming for three star events, and Smart Lady, who's being prepared for two star. “I enjoy training my horses in all three disciplines,” Karen told us, “and the technical, physical and psychological challenge of producing them up through the grades is one of the best bits of my job.” Karen’s afternoons are taken up mainly with teaching where she imparts valuable advice, learned from years of experience, to individuals or groups of any level at lectures and clinics. Keeping positive when things go wrong and working hard are her top tips for success though she admits that a bit of luck is always handy as well!
