A covering stallion should be fit during the covering season, as condition can affect libido and an overweight stallion may be more prone to injuries. The stallion’s diet may need to change throughout the year, depending on the type of work he is doing. A balanced diet is essential for maintaining fertility and general good health.

No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes, No.3 Stud Cubes or No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix are ideal for the poorer doer or stallion who needs extra condition before or during the covering season.  All are formulated to be non-heating, though cubes will be the preferred choice for the stallion with an excitable temperament as they are lower in starch than their mix equivalent.

"The combination of No.3 and No.17 had Mister Baileys looking in absolutely fantastic condition, which he maintained throughout the covering season."
Charlie Oakshott, Whitsbury Manor Stud

Lo-Cal balancer or Stud Balancer are ideal for good doers, for stallions with a light covering programme or for those with limited appetites as they provide a concentrated source of nutrients without the calories of traditional feeds.

As with many horses in peak physical condition, stallions may occasionally become fussy eaters during the covering season. No.13 Oat-Free Horse & Pony Mix or No.8 Meadow Sweet with honey are high fibre mixes with added herbs which may tempt the fussy eater.
