All the horses featured here are genuinely thriving with Baileys Outshine added to their existing balanced diets.
Being a supplement, Outshine should only be added to an existing balanced diet so, if you have any doubts about what you are feeding your horse, check out our How much to feed guide or talk to one of our nutritionists. Often, just ensuring that you are feeding the correct feed at the right levels will give you the results you are after but there are occasions when things aren’t that simple.

16.1hh 4 year old, Clancy, can be highly strung but needs to look and feel good so that he can perform at his best in the show ring and dressage arena. Owner, Sally Hobbs, has worked with Baileys Nutritionist, Lorna Jowett, since the horse was competing in-hand, when she fed Top Line Conditioning Cubes with considerable success. During the winter Clancy gets ad lib haylage but Sally can only feed him twice a day so, as he needs more calories to support his increasing workload, she turned to Outshine to provide these in a small volume. Clancy gets 3 mugs of Outshine per day added to the recommended amount of cubes so he’s getting the slow release energy he needs without his meals being made too large.
Sally Hobbs says, “Clancy looks and performs really well on the recommended amount of conditioning cubes but can have a tendency to drop weight in the winter. I can’t feed him more than twice a day but by adding Baileys Outshine high oil supplement to his diet I can give him extra slow release calories in a small volume so I’m not feeding him bucket-loads of feed in one go.”
15.3hh Thoroughbred mare, Trenear, is a talented eventer but can be very tense, particularly in the dressage arena, and is also a fussy eater. After being treated for gastric ulcers, she was put on a diet of No.6 All-Round Endurance Mix as its high fibre, high oil formula supplies the required slow release calories and is lower in starch than other competition mixes. As her appetite is not huge and Trenear will not eat the full recommended amount of mix for her size and workload, Baileys Nutritionist, Lorna Jowett, also recommends that rider, Georgie Spence, adds a couple of mugs of Stud Balancer to her diet to ensure the vitamin and mineral levels are sufficient to support performance. Trenear also gets an additional couple of mugs of Outshine to supply extra slow release calories in a small volume to help keep the condition on.
Georgie Spence says, “Trenear’s really fussy and doesn’t eat much so it’s been a big problem getting weight and condition on her, particularly as she’s quite hot-headed! She now gets just a couple of mugs of Baileys Outshine added to her mix to give her the extra slow release calories she needs without adding a massive amount of extra feed – she’s nice, calm and rounded plus her coat’s amazingly shiny. Plus, that small quantity of Outshine has given her extra stamina so she can do all the competitions I want her to.”
15.3hh Thoroughbred, Rise & Shine, is an important member of Oli Hipwood’s string and needs to have the stamina to play regularly whilst keeping a level head and maintaining condition through, what can be, a tough season. Like many horse owners, Oli has the problem of feeding sufficient calories and nutrients to his horses to support their level of performance whilst keeping the amount of feed manageable. He can only feed twice a day so, like Georgie and Trenear, he adds Stud Balancer to Rise & Shine’s Top Line Conditioning Cubes, along with 2 to 4 mugs of Outshine, to supply the additional nutrients and calories without significantly adding to meal sizes. Oil helps promote stamina because the energy it supplies is used by the muscles when they are working at low intensities. This leaves stores of glycogen (the storage form of glucose) for use by the muscles when work intensity goes up. Oli also finds that Rise & Shine recovers from matches well because her energy stores are not fully depleted each time.
Oli Hipwood says, “I’ve been completely converted to the benefits of oil since I started adding Outshine to Rise & Shine’s conditioning cubes. Her improved stamina is noticeable as she recovers well between chukkas and bounces quickly back from hard matches – all whilst remaining calm and easy to handle yet with the power, speed and control I need on the pitch. Plus the shine on her, and the other ponies’ coats, confirms my reputation for turning out a string of ponies in fantastic condition.”
15.2hh Thoroughbred mare, Samantha, had been notoriously difficult to manage and was so prone to tying-up that owner, Max, was going to retire her from polo and put her in foal. As one last try though, he took the advice of Baileys Nutritionist, Lorna Jowett, and changed her diet to ad lib hay and Baileys All-Round Endurance Mix. This high fibre, high oil mix is particularly palatable and formulated to support up to the highest levels of work. Fussy Samantha also gets 4 or 5 mugs of Outshine added to her mix, according to workload, and has really turned a corner; she hasn’t tied-up for a year and has been Best Playing Pony on two occasions. Outshine’s high oil formula helps keep the overall starch level of Samantha’s diet down, something which has been found important in managing horses prone to tying-up, whilst supplying the necessary supporting antioxidants so that the body can utilise the oil more efficiently.
Max says, “I was going to retire my polo pony, Samantha, because she was so prone to tying-up. We really struggled to find the right diet because we need to keep starch levels down whilst still giving her the energy and stamina to practice and play regularly. She’s also fussy and backs off her feed but, on Baileys’ advice, she now enjoys high oil, high fibre All-Round Endurance Mix to which we add Baileys Outshine for additional slow release calories in a small volume. I can honestly say “Sam” is now like a different pony – she looks great and played all this season without a hint of a problem!”
Renowned show producer, Lynn Russell, is keeping 15.1hh Phoenix in work throughout the winter to work on his training and to build his muscle tone and strength for next season. He’s clipped out to avoid loss of condition through excessive sweating and it’s naturally important to Lynn that he looks and feels great whatever she’s doing with him. To help build his top line and condition, Lynn gives Phoenix Top Line Conditioning Mix and adds Outshine to it, especially during the winter, to supply a few extra slow release calories whilst making his skin soft and supple and giving his coat a great shine. Lynn finds that feeding Outshine seems to reduce the incidence of dry, scurfy skin and make the hair easier to clip, important when you’ve got a lot of horses to do.
Lynn Russell says, “Phoenix is still in work so I keep him clipped out. I add a couple of mugs of Outshine to his conditioning mix and find this really does give an amazing shine to his coat and the hair seems easier to clip so I get a really polished finish without any lines. Obviously, for me great condition and a shiny coat are particularly important and the more this comes from the feeding, the less grooming I have to do!!”
Chocolate may be only 14hh but he leads a busy life as a covering stallion and champion show pony. He therefore needs the diet to match, with correct balanced nutrition being as important to support fertility and semen quality as it is for condition and performance. Omega oils, like those found in Outshine, are an important component of cell membranes which is why they are important for skin condition as well as the integrity of a stallion’s sperm cells. Rider Vanessa, feeds Chocolate, who is actually quite a good doer, Baileys Stud Balancer to ensure he has all the nutrients he needs for health, well-being and to support performance. This supplies no calories though, so Vanessa adds Outshine for slow release calories and Omega oils, according to condition, workload and time of year. The slow release calories from oil also help promote stamina so that Chocolate can perform as well in the last Championship class of the day as he does in the morning qualifiers.
Vanessa Yap says, “Chocolate has had a busy and successful showing season and is still looking great. I add Baileys Outshine to his feed to give him extra slow release calories in a small volume. Not only does this help maintain overall condition and give his coat an amazing shine, it also improves his stamina without going to his head so he can sparkle in the ring right to the end of the day.”
Pauline Higgs says, “Mydass has a lovely calm attitude and is very laid back about things so I did not want to feed something that would fizz him up. Adding a couple of mugs of Outshine to his feed helps boost his recovery and stamina in the rides and he still remains nice and calm. Plus it gives him a lovely shiny coat and presence in the ring which is an added bonus when I show him in-hand.”
